I first discovered Yami Gautam Dhar in Vicky Donor and instantly became a fan. Hence, I’ll choose Vicky Donor as my favourite role of hers. In 2022, she mesmerised me in the movie Lost and proved how refined her acting skills were. She portrayed her emotions as Vidhi adroitly, making the transition from happiness to anger and an anxious state of mind. Last but not least, her radiant smile is like a cherry on the cake. Tanima Kundu
What fascinates me most about Yami is that she has created her place in Bollywood not for glamour but for her talent and skills. Her acting in Uri: The Surgical Strike is my favourite. This movie was a game-changer for Yami. The film’s immense success not only earned her critical acclaim but also resonated with audiences across the nation. Her performance was raw, authentic and emotionally charged. After this film, we got to see a more versatile Yami who has proven her skill in pivotal roles in films like A Thursday, Lost, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, Dasvi and OMG 2.
Puhabi Das
The role I enjoyed the most was Bala. Yami’s Pari Mishra, a model who has only one motive in life — to look beautiful — suited her perfectly. Bala is a comedy and Yami pulled off a cracker in some of the comedic scenes. Two of Yami’s scenes need special mention — Pari jumping off the bed yelling: “I love you Babyou!” and after discovering Bala is bald, she overreacts and wails: “Mera pati ganja hai!”.
Dayita Chakraborty
My favourite is from a lesser-known movie called Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga. Directed by Ajay Singh, this 2023 movie is about a flight attendant and her tale of revenge. The story is about a diamond heist that turns into a hijacking. A smart alec thief who decides to betray Yami’s charavter and is in turn fooled by her. And how! The movie belongs to Yami. She is the soul and heart of the story. She does full justice to the role of a wronged woman and embodies the adage ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.’
Pampa Paul
My favourite Yami Gautam Dhar role will be of Naina in A Thursday. She left no crumbs in depicting the frustration and helplessness of the women going through a trauma that murders their soul every moment.
Ishani Sen
One of my favourite Yami Gautam Dhar performances is in her Bollywood debut Vicky Donor. Ashima (Yami), a Bengali by birth, meets Vicky Arora (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Punjabi munda in her workplace. Yami’s remarkable spontaneity, despite being a newbie, was astounding. Her tempestuous outburst, when she realises that Vicky donates sperm as a profession, is in sync with her predicament of not being able to bear a child. Eventually, she realises that Vicky is the source of happiness to numerous childless couples and happily accepts an orphaned child as her own. She proves her mettle as an actor when she makes the transition from being a shattered woman to one who adopts her husband’s biological daughter, a very realistic one.
Suparna Ghosh
Of the characters Yami has performed so far, Jasmine aka Pallavi Sharma in Uri: The Surgical Strike and Naina Jaiswal in A Thursday are, in my opinion, perfect.
Both in Uri and A Thursday, Yami plays a role where she transforms from being dominated to dominating others. In Uri, she begins as a nurse to look after Major Vihaan Shergill’s (Vicky Kaushal) ailing mother. Everything goes fine until Vihaan’s mother goes missing from home. This situational crisis coerces Jasmine to reveal her identity as a RAW officer because Jasmine’s female psyche is aware of her identity not to submit to any domination, but rather to dominate others. Doubtlessly, she performs as both Jasmine and Pallavi with utmost brilliance, beauty and balance.
The role of Naina in A Thursday is to take revenge in the aftermath of being brutally raped as a child and then failing to get justice from the system. She challenges the system by holding the kids she teaches as hostages. The shock of accepting the twist is interesting. She forces the Prime Minister to visit her, and thus, the system surrenders to her rage. She also kills her rapist. Though the plot of A Thursday is not strong enough, Yami’s performance is beyond question.
Supratik Dalal
My favourite role of the pretty actress till now is of Ashima Roy from Vicky Donor, the 2012 film with which she made her debut in Bollywood. She delivered a very fine performance as Ashima in that Shoojit Sircar directorial.
