After making history with the biggest opening of 2024 for any Bengali film, Windows Production’s Bohurupi reaches a fever pitch. Directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Bohurupi continues to break box office records. Theatres not only in Calcutta but across the nation are quickly selling out, indicating that it is a blockbuster this festive season. In its first week alone, there were 1,026 shows in Calcutta.
Major cities beyond Calcutta, such as Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Bengaluru, have seen prime shows nearly sell out, leading to a surge in last-minute bookings. In total, there were 2,408 shows across India in the second week. In response to this overwhelming demand, theatre owners have added approximately 42 shows statewide. The film has already crossed over ₹8.94 crore, and is likely to cross ₹10 crore this weekend.
With its exceptional performance and no notable Bengali releases until December, Bohurupi is poised to cross ₹15 crore in the coming weeks. “It is our biggest budget venture and is likely to be the biggest hit in our career. We strongly feel that content is the king, and if you provide the audience with what they want, they will fill up the theatres,” said Nandita Roy.
“Last year, Nandita Roy and I released our directorial venture, Raktabeej, for the first time during Durga Puja. We tasted immense success with the political thriller, which was a runaway blockbuster. That gave us the courage to bring Bohurupi this year, and the collections have been very encouraging, with theatres registering 3.40 lakh footfall in seven days,” said Shiboprosad Mukherjee.
“This partnership is sure to deliver quality films. Our halls Minar and Bijoli both performed well at the box office during the festival season. The audience surge following the festival is something I’ve never experienced before. My theatre was completely full even in the second week. Bengali cinema has ushered in a new wave with Bohurupi. All of us single-screen owners are extremely pleased,” said Suranjan Pal, owner of Minar and Bijoli.
“After the festival, this is the first movie for which I’ve scheduled three shows, and all of them were sold out, thanks to the audience. At first, I was a bit hesitant to schedule a night show after the festival, but I was amazed by the audience’s response. When I spoke with Shibu, he asked, ‘Did I manage to hold my head high, brother?’ The three months leading up to the festival were quite challenging for us. We hope that Bohurupi will perform even better, especially considering how warmly the audience has embraced it. It seems that people are coming back to watch the movie multiple times, not just once or twice,” said Joydeep Mukherjee, owner of Star Theatre.
“Everything was successful during the festival. However, this is a long race for the multifaceted competitor. We could tell within the first two days that it would perform this way after the festival. I believe this film will break many new records and achieve box office collections that no Bengali film has seen in quite some time,” said Prabir Roy, owner of Ashoka Cinema.
“At Navina, all the shows were completely sold out. Even after the festival, nearly every show is almost full. People are really enjoying it. I hope all the upcoming films will be as good as Bohurupi. Everyone seems to agree that it would be great to watch the movie again and again,” said Navin Chokhani, owner of Navina Cinema.
