Michael Keaton returns as the eponymous ghost in the trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the second film of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice horror-comedy franchise, 36 years after the original film’s release in 1988. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara also reprise their roles from the first film in the upcoming sequel.

Dropped by Warner Brothers Pictures on Thursday, the two-minute-19-second-long trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens with Ryder’s Lydia Deetz warning viewers that the preview will be intense. The next scene shows a hilly landscape followed by a funeral where attendees are dressed in black. The film introduces Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter Astrid and features O’Hara as Delia Deetz. During the funeral, Astrid expresses disbelief at her grandfather’s death. “Death is hard,” Lydia says, to which Astrid replies, “Yeah, sometimes I think life is harder.”

Lydia narrates how Beetlejuice once terrorised her family and tried to force her into marriage. She thought he was gone for good until Astrid discovers a poster for a bio-exorcist in the attic. Despite Astrid's warnings, Lydia repeats Beetlejuice’s name three times, summoning Keaton’s character. “I am gonna make you so happy,” Beetlejuice says to Lydia. The trailer then depicts scenes of chaos and terror in the town, with Lydia asking, “Can the living and the dead co-exist?”

The trailer shows a factory explosion, an aircraft flying and a lightning striking a laboratory as the characters are left aghast. Monica Bellucci appears in a black gown with a scarred face, aggressively interrogating a man about Beetlejuice’s whereabouts. Along with Bellucci and Ortega, the new cast members include Justin Theroux, Arthur Conti and Willem Dafoe.

The trailer also features jarring visuals like a puppet with bulging eyes and a long tongue. A scene of Astrid and Lydia being chased by a giant monster culminates in Ryder’s and Theroux’s characters finding themselves in Beetlejuice’s office, where Beetlejuice uses magic to silence Ryder, and Theroux faints after witnessing the scene.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times, summoning the mischievous demon to unleash his unique brand of mayhem.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice, is produced by Marc Toberoff, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Tommy Harper and Tim Burton, with Sara Desmond, Katterli Frauenfelder, Al Gough, Miles Millar, Brad Pitt, Larry Wilson, Laurence Senelick, Pete Chiappetta, Andrew Lary, Anthony Tittanegro, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg executive producing.

The horror comedy is slated to hit the theaters on September 6.
