Michael Keaton returns as the titular ghost in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice featuring Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz as a goth-loving mother this time, shows the recently dropped teaser trailer of the sequel to the Tim Burton-directed 1988 comedy-horror Beetlejuice. The upcoming film also stars Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter.

Dropped by Warner Bros. Pictures on Friday, the one-minute-16-second-long teaser begins with Jenna’s Astrid Deetz cycling past Miss Shannon's School for Girls, a Connecticut-based girls’ private school which was attended by her mother Lydia in the original film. As compared to her mother who used to be a goth teenager with a fascination for the macabre, Astrid sports a casual multi-colour ribbed dress with minimal make-up on her face.

The video is set to a choral version of the traditional Jamaican folk song Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) by Harry Belafonte, which was used by Burton in the original film during an iconic scene where Lydia dances and lip-syncs to it at a dinner party hosted by her parents and the Deetzes' obnoxious guests.

As the haunting score plays in the background, we get an intense shot of Lydia, Astrid and Catherine O'Hara's Delia Deetz at a funeral. The camera then pans to Astrid unveiling a miniature model of Winter River in her attic. The scene culminates in Lydia rushing upstairs and discovering the model uncovered. Right then, a ghastly, towering figure of Keaton’s Beetlejuice rises from behind the model in front of Lydia who gapes in horror.

The 1988 film revolved around Barbara and Adam Maitland’s ghosts haunting their former home after dying in a car accident. When the Deetz family moves in, the Maitlands seek the help of the mischievous Beetlejuice to scare them away. But the plan results in chaos as Beetlejuice turns rogue. Ultimately, the Maitland ghosts and the Deetz family seek Lydia’s help to outsmart Beetlejuice and find a way to peacefully coexist with each other in the house.

“After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem,” reads the official synopsis of the film by the makers.

Also starring Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is slated to release in theatres on September 6.
