Disco Dancer - The Musical, a Broadway-style celebration of late composer Bappi Lahiri’s cult classics with a reimagined score by Salim-Sulaiman, is set to make its India premiere in Mumbai on April 14.

Currently regaling audiences in London’s West End Theatre, the musical, which traces the nostalgia for the 1980s disco era, will be brought to Indian shores by Saregama Live and Suniel Shetty.

Singer Bappa Lahiri, son of Bappi, expressed hope that Disco Dancer - The Musical would literally set the stage for more theatrical interpretations of great cinematic musicals. “This is the perfect tribute to my father and to Bollywood musicals. Disco Dancer did very well at both home and abroad because its music was situational, emotive and made you connect with the characters,” he said.

“I eagerly look forward to the reimagined version of popular hits like Goron Ki Na Kalon Ki, Yaad Aa Raha Hai, Jimmy Jimmy and Disco Dancer to be performed live,” he added.Rema Lahiri, sister of Bappa, sounded equally excited about the musical. “It makes me both proud and emotional to think that people still fondly remember the music composed by my father. This musical has further solidified my belief that good music lives on forever."

Bappi Lahiri, fondly referred to as Bappi da, was known as the ‘Disco KIng’ of Bollywood of the 1980s and 1990s, especially for his popular numbers in films like Disco Dancer (1982) and Dance Dance (1987). He passed away on February 15, 2022.
