Bangladeshi filmmaker Proshoon Rahman has given us a peek into Dear Satyajit (Priyo Satyajit), his tribute to the legendary filmmaker, by dropping a trailer on Ray’s 31st death anniversary.
The trailer shows a young filmmaker, Aparajita (Moutushi Biswas), reading passages from Satyajit Ray's book Deep Focus. She is planning a documentary on veteran filmmaker Asif Mahmud (Ahmed Rubel), who has been deeply influenced by Satyajit Ray and even dresses like him.
On their way to Ray’s ancestral home in Mosua village in Bangladesh, Asif shares that his pet name is Apu — which is also the name of the protagonist in Ray’s Apu trilogy — and that the trajectory of his life closely resembles that of his namesake from Ray’s classics.
“Dear Satyajit takes effort to tell the unfulfilled dream of a Bengali filmmaker who constantly tried to reach the artistic quality and standard of his idol,” the makers said.
The film premiered at the South Asian Film Festival in Vancouver, Canada, in November, 2022. It was also screened at the Florence International Film Festival 2022, the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala and the 15th Jaipur International Film Festival.
Dear Satyajit won the Jury Prize as Best Feature Film at the Florence International Film Festival. The film also bagged awards for Best Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Editing at the Jaipur International Film Festival.
