James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water won in the best special visual effects category and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was awarded the best animated film at Sunday’s British Academy Film Awards, which witnessed a remarkable haul of seven awards by German anti-war drama All Quiet on the Western Front on the night.

London’s Royal Festival Hall buzzed with celebrities even as Justin Hurwitz took home the best original score for his work in Damien Chazelle’s epic period black comedy-drama film Babylon. The Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva-starrer film also won the best production design award.

Young Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells took home the prize for the outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer award for her family drama film Aftersun. The film stars Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio as a father and daughter on holiday in Turkey in the late 1990s.

Surprisingly, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, dubbed as one of the favourites in the Oscar race next month, failed to bag multiple awards as it won just one prize for editing from an impressive line-up of 10 nominations.
