British actor David Tennant has been named as the host for the upcoming 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, set to be held on February 18 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London.
“I am delighted to have been asked to host the EE BAFTA Film Awards and help celebrate the very best of this year’s films and the many brilliant people who bring them to life,” Tennant told American entertainment magazine Deadline, reacting to the news.
The Doctor Who actor steps into the shoes of Richard E. Grant, who helmed the previous edition of the awards ceremony.
The announcement of Tennant's hosting gig coincides with the imminent revelation of the longlists across all 24 BAFTA categories on Friday. The final nominees will be disclosed via livestream by former EE Rising Star Award nominees Naomi Ackie and Kingsley Ben-Adir on January 18.
Known for playing the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who, Tennant has recently returned to the show in 2023 to play the titular role again in the Christmas Special episodes of the longest-running British sci-fi show, now available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip said they were “over the moon” at Tennant’s appointment as host of the prestigious award ceremony. “He is deservedly beloved by British and international audiences alike. His warmth, charm, and mischievous wit will make it a must-watch show next month for our guests at the Royal Festival Hall and the millions of people watching at home.”
