Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Miami PD detectives find themselves in a soup when their deceased boss Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) is framed as a drug dealer in the trailer of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the fourth instalment of the action-comedy series, dropped by the makers on Tuesday.

The two-minute-54-second-long trailer kicks off by showing the signature quirks of Smith’s Mike Lowrey and Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett, who can get out of any dangerous situation with their quick wit. However, they find themselves in a fix when their late captain is revealed to have been involved directly with drug cartels for years. Adding to the tension is a video message in which the late captain warns the two cops to not trust anyone.

Embarking on a mission to clear his name, the duo get involved in adrenaline-pumping car chases and explosive action scenes while still keeping their signature cop humour in place. “You need to get a job,” Burnett says to his son-in-law Reggie, who replies that he is a US Marine. “Well, then you need to deploy,” Burnett responded immediately.

The Bad Boys franchise began in 1995, followed by the second film in 2003, with Smith and Lawrence investigating and busting illegal drug activity in Miami. The third film, Bad Boys for Life, came out in 2020 after a hiatus of 17 years. The first two films were directed by Michael Bay. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who helmed the previous instalment, have returned to direct Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

The buddy cop comedy also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Lex Elle, Paola Núñez, Ryan Castle, Eric Dane, Tasha Smith and Melanie Liburd. It is produced by Will Smith, Jerry Bruckheimer, Doug Belgrad and Chad Oman.

“We back in this thang!! Bad Boys: Ride or Die in theatres June 7th!! Y’all aren’t ready for this one,” Will Smith wrote in the description of the trailer shared on YouTube.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is slated to release in theatres on June 7.
