September 1 calls for packed suitcases, house scarves wrapped around your neck and a jug of butterbeer in your hand because it’s Back to Hogwarts Day, celebrated every year by Potterheads (Harry Potter fans) across the world to remember the start of the session at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Though Daniel Radcliff aka Harry Potter from the Harry Potter films isn’t on social media, his co-star Tom Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy in the movie series, made sure to celebrate the day.

Here are six friendship stories from the Harry Potter film series to celebrate Back to Hogwarts Day.

Ron rescues Harry (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)

When Harry Potter’s uncle Mr Dursley traps him with metal bars on his window to stop him from going back to Hogwarts, Ron (Rupert Grint) and his twin brothers, Fred and George (James Andrew Eric Phelps and Oliver Martyn John Phelps) come to Harry’s rescue in their dad’s flying Ford Angila. Ron knew there was something wrong as Harry wasn’t answering any of his letters, and crafted a plan to rescue him. The magical escape was made even better by Ron wishing Harry a happy birthday when everyone else had forgotten about it.

Harry helping Cedric (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)

Harry and Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) were pitted against each other during the Triwizard Tournament but that didn’t stop Harry from telling Cedric about the dragons and the imminent dangers beforehand. Cedric returned the favour later by telling Harry how to open up the dragon egg without hearing the screeches of the Grindylows.

Hermione and Harry dancing (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1)

As tension builds up due to the impending threat of Voldemort and the Death Eaters looking for the trio, Ron leaves Harry and Hermione (Emma Watson) and goes off by himself. On seeing Hermione struggling after Ron’s departure, Harry takes her hand to make her dance to a song, O children by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, playing on the radio. This tender moment between Harry and Hermione reminds us of what the series taught us from the beginning — friendship above everything else. The best part about the scene is that there’s not even a hint of romance. It’s just two friends swaying to music to lift their spirits in the midst of a war between Voldemort’s army and the rest of the wizarding world.

Luna and Harry talk about death and Thestrals (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) is one of the most eccentric characters in the entire series but she is also one of Harry’s closest friends. The two met for the first time in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and soon found a common ground — they could see Thestrals, the magical creatures who pull the carts but cannot be seen by anyone other than those who have witnessed death. Later in the film, Luna explains why only she and Harry could see Thestrals — while Luna saw her mother die, Harry saw Cedric die in The Goblet of Fire. This scene serves as a foundation of their friendship that remains close to Harry’s heart, so much so that he even names one of his children Lily ‘Luna’ Potter.

Dobby and Hedwig sacrifice themselves to save Harry (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1)

Harry has always shared a connection with the fantastic creatures in the world of witchcraft and wizardry. Dobby, the elf, was Harry’s friend above all and gave up his life to save Harry from Bellatrix Lestrange, who was loyal to Lord Voldemort. Hedwig, the snowy white owl, was Hagrid’s first gift to Harry. The owl also sacrifices himself to save Harry and in turn becomes the last bit of Harry’s innocence that dies along with him.

Sirius and Lupin reuniting (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

When Sirius Black takes Harry, Ron and Hermione to the Shrieking Shack, he does so in order to tell Harry the truth about Peter Pettigrew, a friend of Harry’s dad James Potter, who gave Voldemort the whereabouts of James and his wife Lily Potter which led to their death. But the growing tension and the fake rumors about Sirius make Harry and Hermione scared of him.

This is when Remus Lupin, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and also a friend to James, comes in, who, at first, seems like he is about to rescue the trio but instead hugs Sirius Lupin. The scene is definitely the biggest twist in the film and leaves Harry and Hermione shocked at their professor’s betrayal. But the importance of this scene lies in the moment when Lupin emotionally hugs Sirius upon reuniting with his friend after 12 years. They had initially started a group called ‘the Marauders’ that included James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew.
