Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo has taken a playful jab at veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese, hinting at the box office success of MCU films and rekindling the feud that started back in 2019 after Scorsese equated MCU films with “theme parks”.
In a video including a clip from Scorsese’s daughter Francesca Scorsese’s recent TikTok post, Joe cracks a joke on their dog being named Oscar. He then calls his pet dog of the same breed by the name “Box Office” to convey that the box office figures were on his side even though Scorsese won the Oscars.
In Francesca’s original video, the 80-year-old director is seen directing his Schnauzer dog named Oscar to show him a sad expression.
“Aww look he’s got a Schnauzer. I love Schnauzers. And his name is Oscar, that’s really cute…Oscar,” says Joe in his video. Then the camera pans out to show The Gray Man director holding his own dog, which too is a Schnauzer, and he continues to say, “alright c’mon Box Office.”
Back in 2019, Scorsese had said in an interview that superhero films were not to his liking. When asked if he had watched MCU films, Killers of the Flower Moon director had said, “I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well-made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
Russo is not the only MCU filmmaker to have responded to the comments. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, following Scorsese’s comments, had tweeted, “Martin Scorsese is one of my 5 favorite living filmmakers. I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. I'm saddened that he's now judging my films in the same way.”
Five-years after Scorsese's scorching opinion, Russo rekindled the feud with his video.
