James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which released in cinemas worldwide on December 16, is unstoppable at the global box office. The sci-fi adventure has already set a record as the fastest film to reach USD 1 billion in global collections.
Audiences around the world thronged the pristine locales of Pandora on screen, ringing in the New Year, as The Way of Water continued to set the cash registers ringing.
As per Box Office Mojo, Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2) has registered collections worth USD 421.6 million in the domestic US market and USD 956.9 million internationally. Its global earnings stand at USD 1.38 billion nett. Cameron’s blockbuster is the second highest-grossing movie of 2022, breathing down the neck of Tom Cruise-starrer Top Gun: Maverick which has collected USD 1.48 billion nett.
Avatar 2 continues to dominate the box office in India too. It had a solid New Year weekend and has been earning in double digits daily. According to Box Office India reports, the sequel to Avatar, Cameron’s 2009 superhit film, collected around Rs 17.25 crore on January 1, taking its total collection in India to Rs 333 crore nett. If this trend continues, Avatar 2 will easily cross the lifetime collection of Avengers: Endgame in India, which stands at Rs 367 crore.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water revolves around Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their kids losing their beloved homeland and journeying to the Metkayina reef. Sigourney Weaver returns in the sequel which also stars Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, Cliff Curtis and Trinity Bliss.
