Avatar: The Way of Water beats Spider Man: No Way Home to become the highest grossing film in post-pandemic era

The sequel to Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron, is inching towards the USD 2-billion mark

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has become the highest grossing film in the post-pandemic era, surpassing the collections of Marvel’s Spider Man: No Way Home (2021), according to global box office figures.

Avatar 2 has grossed USD 1.928 billion worldwide, which is higher than the lifetime earnings of No Way Home (USD 1.921 billion), highlights data with American website Box Office Mojo.

The Way of Water is now the sixth highest grossing film of all time, behind Avatar (2009) on USD 2.93 billion, Avengers: Endgame (2019) on USD 2.797 billion; Titanic (1997) on USD 2.195 billion; Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015) on USD 2.069 billion; and Avengers: infinity War (2018) on USD 2.048 billion.

Cameron’s sci-fi film, which released in theatres on December 16, 2022, is also inching towards the USD 2 billion mark at the global box office. Avatar 2 will be Cameron’s third film to hit this milestone, after Avatar (2009) and Titanic (1997).

A major share of Avatar: The Way of Water’s collections are from the international market. The visual drama has grossed USD 1.35 billion from the global box office while the US domestic market contributed USD 574 million. The film is unstoppable at the Indian box office as well, raking in Rs 470 crore gross in 34 days.

Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet, Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of Jake Sully and his Na'vi family more than a decade after the events of the first film in the franchise.
