Avatar: The Way of Water has become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing the collections of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War (2018). According to Box Office Mojo, James Cameron’s Avatar 2 has grossed USD 2.054 billion worldwide, which is higher than the lifetime collection of Infinity War, which stood at USD 2.052 billion.

Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to beat the collections of the 2015 blockbuster Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which had raked in USD 2.069 billion, over the weekend. It will then become the fourth highest grosser of all time, right behind Avatar (2009) at USD 2.93 billion, Avengers: Endgame (2019) at USD 2.797 billion and Titanic (1997) at USD 2.195 billion.

Avatar: The Way of Water is Cameron’s third film to hit the USD two billion mark, after Avatar and Titanic. A major share of Avatar: The Way of Water’s collections are from the international market. The visual drama has grossed USD 603 million in the US domestic market, while international box office contributed USD 1.45 billion.

A sequel to Avatar, The Way of Water has been having a phenomenal run at the Indian box office as well, raking in Rs 475 crore gross in 42 days. The juggernaut came to a halt with the release of Siddharth Anand’s spy action thriller Pathaan, marking Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback to the big screen after four years.

The events of Avatar: The Way of Water are set more than a decade after the first film. The story revolves around Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their kids who battle new challenges to keep their home safe. The sequel features Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton and Trinity Bliss.
