Jennifer Lopez’s data analyst pilots a futuristic robot into space to capture a renegade machine in order to save the Earth from imminent danger in the teaser of Netflix’s sci-fi thriller Atlas, dropped by the streamer on Wednesday.

Set in a high-tech and futuristic world, the one-minute-47-second-long video introduces Lopez’s Atlas Shepherd as a “brilliant but misanthropic data analyst” who is catapulted into a distant world to save the earth from robotic and AI dangers. However, she soon realises that the only way to save earth from artificial intelligence is to trust it.

The teaser begins with Atlas on the verge of falling unconscious after the robot she was piloting crashes on the ground. The subsequent scenes show a bunch of robots controlled by humans fighting enemies amid wide-scale explosions.

High-octane action scenes show Lopez sitting in the cockpit of a mech and panting heavily while destroying enemy machines. It ends with Atlas’s robot plummeting onto a snow-covered land, leaving her stranded in the deserted place.

“Atlas Shepherd (Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it,” reads the official synopsis of the film on Netflix’s blog.

Helmed by San Andreas and Rampage director Brad Peyton, Atlas also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory J. Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla and Mark Strong.

Last year, Lopez starred in the Netflix thriller The Mother, in which she played an assassin on the run from dangerous assailants deep in the Alaskan forests. Operating under the code name ‘The Mother’, Lopez’s character comes out of hiding to protect her daughter whom she had abandoned earlier in life in the Niki Caro-directed film.

Touted as a “galaxy-spanning adventure”, Atlas is written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite. The upcoming science fiction thriller film is slated to premiere on Netflix on May 24.
