Director Ayan Mukerji has increased our curiosity some more about his upcoming film Brahmastra Part One: Shiva with a new video today. Here’s a breakdown of the trailers of Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, to piece together what to expect from the September 9 film.

Inspiration behind Brahmastra Part One: Shiva

In the new video that dropped today, and also shared by Alia Bhatt on her Instagram handle, Ayan talks about his inspiration behind the film and drops more hints on what to expect.

The seed of Brahmastra came from his love for Indian mythology, filled with stories of gods and goddesses, as well as his interest in fantasy novels, said Ayan. He mentions the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter novels as some of his all-time favourite reads, and he’s an Avengers geek like many of us. The tonal quality of Brahmastra has been inspired by his passion for the Marvel films along with films like Avatar, and what we can finally expect is “an original film”.

Ranbir Kapoor as Shiva

Soon-to-be father Ranbir Kapoor plays the role of Shiva, a DJ by day and ‘Agniastra’ by night. We are still not sure if the name Shiva points to Ranbir being an embodiment of Lord Mahadev, but there’s certainly a hint at the mythological Nandi (played by Nagarjuna).

In Indian mythology, Nandi is always seen by the side of Shiva. Similarly, Nagarjuna is also seen protecting Ranbir in the trailer. Another hint at Shiva being Mahadev himself is the presence of Alia Bhatt’s character, Isha. She is the love interest of Shiva, and Isha is another name of Parvati.

Astraverse

The Astraverse of Brahmastra, quite similar to Marvel’s multiverse, is a universe embodied by the powers of astras (divine weapons). According to Ayan, Brahsmastra is first in a series of three films that encapsulate the Astraverse, India’s first original fictional universe.

A total of 11 astras can be seen in the trailer of the film, most of which are unknown till now. Some of the known astras include Vanarastra, Nandiastra, Jalastra, Pawanastra, Agniastra, Prabhastra, Naagastra and Brahmastra (reminding us heavily of the Infinity Stones in the Avengers films).

An important part of this universe, as hinted by the trailers, is the colour of the astras. While Prabhastra and Nandiastra are blue, some of the other astras, like the one used by Mouni Roy’s character, take on the colour red — the red and blue colour determining negativity or positivity attached to the user of the said astra. Ranbir’s character is an exception as he is an astra himself and does not need a talisman to use the power of Agniastra.
