Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman and Scarlett Johansson stumble upon evidence proving an alien’s existence at a 1950’s desert town known for nurturing space cadets in the trailer of Wes Anderson’s upcoming feature film Asteroid City, dropped on Wednesday.

The film, written by Anderson and his long-time collaborator Roman Coppola, explores the booming enthusiasm for space research in America during the 1950s through the trio’s escapades in the fictional desert city, which was struck by a meteor centuries ago.

In the two-minute-25-second-long trailer, we are introduced to Schwartzman’s character, a widower who is stranded in Asteroid City with his three daughters and a son after their car breaks down. His father-in-law, played by Tom Hanks, joins them at Asteroid City and attends the annual Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention, designed to unite students and parents in scholarly competition.

However, the place becomes the centre of attention for the US government after an alien ship makes contact with the space researchers there. The people present in the desert town are now forced to stay in Asteroid City which leads to them forging connections with each other.

The film’s main cast includes Schwartzman, Hanks, Johansson, Hong Chau and Margot Robbie. The ensemble cast also includes Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody and Liev Schreiber.

The Asteroid City trailer taps into the quirky, off-kilter storytelling associated with Anderson. The filmmaker is known for movies like Fantastic Mr. Fox, Isle of Dogs, Moonrise Kingdom, The Royal Tennenbaums and The French Dispatch.

Asteroid City is set for a limited theatrical release on June 16 with a wider expansion on June 23. The film is expected to make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Anderson’s Netflix-backed The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, based on the Roald Dahl book, is also slated to premiere in 2023.
