Singer Arijit Singh has dropped a Bengali song demanding justice for the RG Kar rape victim amidst growing outrage in Kolkata against alleged police inaction and lack of safety for women. Titled Aar Kobe (When), the song has garnered over 3.5 lakh views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.
The three-minute-13-second long song serves as a plea for justice for the victim, while expressing “solidarity with all women who face the horrors of gender-based violence”. The video features a raised fist demanding justice.
“Our song echoes the voices of doctors across the country, who tirelessly serve despite the dangers they face,” the singer wrote on Facebook while sharing the song, which begins with a tribute to Arijit’s mother, teacher and grandmother.
“This is not simply a protest song—it is a call to action. It is a reminder that our fight for women's safety and dignity is far from over. As we sing, we remember the tireless efforts of those on the frontlines—our doctors, our journalists and our students who deserve not just our respect but our protection,” Arjit added.
“Join us in raising our voices. Let this song add to the chorus of dissent. May it be a voice of hope, a plea for justice, and a catalyst for change. Together, we can try to ensure that such tragedies never happen again,” the Murshidabad-based singer signed off.
The gruesome rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the intervening night of August 8 and August 9 has led to a series of protests demanding justice.
