Bang Bang singer Ariana Grande and actress Cynthia Erivo have shared on social media some behind-the-scenes moments from the sets of Jon M. Chu’s movie adaptation of the Wicked Broadway musical.
In the movie, Grande is set to play Glinda, while British actress Erivo will take on the role of Elphaba.
Grande took to Instagram on Sunday to post the photos. “Up to (no) good 🫧 🧹,” she wrote.
The black-and-white images showcase the bonding of the Grande and Erivo. In the first image, Grande and Erivo are seen holding hands. The 29-year-old singer is wearing a polka-dot dress with white gloves, while Erivo wore a plaid ensemble. In the second image, they are posing with another man on the set. The third photo of the duo has them in the back of a vehicle and looking at each other. The next image shows Erivo and Grande holding hands and the last photo is a shot of their shoes.
Wicked will be broken into two parts, with the first part recently moved up to release on November 27, 2024. Jon M. Chu recently confirmed the release date of the first part. The sequel is scheduled to drop the following year on Christmas.
Last year, the director shared a letter on social media, explaining why the story had to be broken in two. “As we prepared for this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it,” he wrote in the letter.
“As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but TWO!!!! With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters,” he mentioned.
The cast of Wicked also includes Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, Keala Settle, Marissa Bode, Brownwyn James, Ethan Slater and Jonathan Bailey.
