A director's cut of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon with 48 minutes of extra footage is now available for streaming on Apple TV+, the filmmaker has announced in a video dropped by the streamer on Thursday,
The historical epic headlined by Joaquin Phoenix was released in theatres last year.
“Hello, people of the internet. This is Ridley Scott speaking,” the filmmaker said in the 26-second video dropped by Apple TV+. “I am thrilled to announce that Napoleon: The Director’s Cut is available exclusively now on Apple TV+ with newly added scenes that expands the scope of this epic production,” he added.
The original two-and-a-half-hour film follows the French military leader from his early years to his rise as emperor. The narrative is framed through his intense and often turbulent relationship with his wife Joséphine (Vanessa Kirby). Napoleon: The Director’s Cut extends the runtime to an impressive three hours and 24 minutes.
While the theatrical version showcased several pivotal battles in Napoleon’s career, the director’s cut introduces an additional conflict, the Battle of Marengo, according to US entertainment portal The Hollywood Reporter. Moreover, the extended version delves deeper into Josephine’s origin story.
Napoleon earned three Oscar nominations for visual effects, production design and costume design, along with four BAFTA nominations for outstanding British film, costume design, hair and makeup, and special effects.
