Rapper AP Dhillon has received heat from netizens for apparently defending his recent guitar-smashing act on the Coachella stage with an old video of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain doing the same.

On Wednesday, the Indo-Canadian musician dropped the video alongside a set of photos from his Coachella performance. “The media is controlled and I’m out of control,” he wrote in the caption, drawing criticism from fans online.

“You’re justifying wrong things brother. Are you even remembering your culture of how we treat musical instruments? That guitar was the one you held for your show and it produced the vibration you wanted,” a social media user wrote, while another advised the musician to show some respect to music.

Other netizens commented about how Dhillon had zero respect for his guitar as a musician. “What a cringe caption lol,” a fan wrote.

The act of breaking guitars on stage can be dated back to as early as 1956 in the US, which was a popular routine among rock stars. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and Peter Townshend of The Who were famous for destroying their instruments on stage after their gigs. In 1967, Jimi Hendrix took things up a notch and burnt his guitar on stage after a performance.

The 23rd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is currently ongoing at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Singers like Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Kesha, Shakira, Katy Perry, Tyler, the Creator and Justin Bieber are performing at this year’s edition of the music festival, which is being held in two parts — the first part from April 12 to 14 and the second from April 19-21.
