Anne Hathaway plays a glamorous pop star in David Lowery’s upcoming film Mother Mary, show first-look images and behind-the-scenes footage dropped by the actress on Saturday.
The behind-the-scenes video shared by Hathaway shows the actress rehearsing for stage performances. We see her holding a microphone and singing while also practising her dance moves. The video ends with a first-look image of her character, who wears a golden leotard and a floor-sweeping cloak for a photoshoot at what seems like a backstage of a theatre. A golden tiara with arrow-like features adds to her glamorous look.
“First look @a24 and David Lowery’s #MotherMary 🩸,”’ the 42-year-old actress wrote alongside the video on Instagram.
According to IMDb, Mother Mary follows the relationship between a famous pop star, played by Hathaway, and a fashion designer. “To become the pop star Mother Mary, Anne Hathaway had to push past self-doubt,” US-based entertainment magazine Vanity Fair wrote about Hathaway’s character.
Mother Mary also stars Hunter Schafer, Alba Baptista, Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, Michaela Coel, Isaura Barbé-Brown and Atheena Frizzell.
Although very little is known about the film besides the cast, the plot does seem to follow up from Hathaway’s recent film The Idea of You, where she played a 40-year-old single mum who falls in love with a 24-year-old pop band singer.
David Lowery, known for his films A Ghost Story, The Green Knight, Pete’s Dragon and The Old Man and the Gun, will be directing the film. It is produced by Toby Halbrooks, Jeanie Igoe, James M. Johnston, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, David Lowery and Jonathan Saubach.
The music for Mother Mary is composed by Jack Antonoff, Daniel Hart and Charli XCX.
Besides Mother Mary, Hathaway will also be seen in the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel Verity. Michael Showalter, who directed Hathaway’s latest film The Idea of You, will be helming the film for Amazon MGM Studios.
