Amitabh Bachchan has shared the trailer of Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming movie Oti Uttam, which uses existing footage of Bengali matinee idol Uttam Kumar and establishes a further connection with the late actor by featuring his grandson Gourab Chatterjee in a key role.
“The first ever film to have a principal character made out of existing footage. A tribute to Uttam Kumar .. Oti Uttam,” wrote Amitabh on X shortly after Camellia Productions dropped the long trailer on March 1.
Resharing Amitabh’s tweet on his Instagram, Srijit thanked the Bollywood veteran, saying his tweet means a lot to the entire team. “Thank you @amitabhbachchan sir, this means a lot to us,” wrote the 46-year-old director.
Headlined by Anindya Sengupta and Roshni Bhattacarya, Oti Uttam blends love and supernatural elements. The three-minute-18-second trailer is filled with clips from Uttam Kumar classics like Sagarika (1956), Saptapadi (1961), Naayak (1966) and Brojobuli (1979).
The trailer begins with Krishnendu (Anindya), a student writing his PhD thesis on the late Bengali star. He hopelessly falls in love with a girl, Sohini (Roshni), who rebuffs his advances. Dismayed, Krishnendu resorts to supernatural aid, conjuring up the spirit of his idol through a seance and urges him to play cupid.
The tables turn when Krishnendu gets injured during a brawl at a bar. Upon gaining consciousness, Krishnendu finds Sohini in his room, ready to acknowledge that he is a “really nice person”. Soon they develop a strong bond and Krishnendu decides to introduce Sohini to the spirit of Uttam Kumar.
In an unexpected twist reserved for the end of the trailer, Krishnendu’s world turns topsy-turvy once again when Sohini claims that she has fallen in love with Kumar’s spirit.
Presented by Rupa Datta, Oti Uttam also features Jina Tarafdar, Subhasish Mukherjee, Laboni Sarkar and Sonia Gupta.
The film is slated to release theatrically on March 22.
