Ameesha Patel wondered how she, the Lazy Lamhe girl, would transform into the mother of a 20-year-old boy for Gadar 2, the actress revealed at the trailer launch event of the sequel to the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha on July 26.

“The biggest challenge was how do I, the Lazy Lamhe girl, look like a mother of a 20-year-old boy! We used to do look tests for 20 hours and would send photos to director Anil Sharma. After a few days, when we succeeded in making me look mature in age, I got a beautiful message from Anil ji, ‘My precious Sakina is back’.”

Ameesha, who made her film debut with the blockbuster Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in 2000, revealed that some big names from the film industry were not so encouraging when she was getting on board for Gadar. “At that time, I was playing a college student in films opposite Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Hrithik Roshan. So, when Gadar was narrated to me and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai had not been released, everyone was saying that I could not play the role of a mother.”

“But I like challenges and I had faith in my director. Nobody can write a more beautiful love story than that. So, I had to say yes to the film. Anil ji was patient with me and worked with me on dialogues and my look for six months,” the actress reminisced about her role in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.

Actors Sunny Deol and Utkarsh Sharma, along with the film’s director Anil Sharma, were also present at the event in Mumbai.

“When I went to Sunny Deol with the story of Gadar 2, he said, “Sharma ji, why are we making Gadar 2?’ But after listening to the story he got emotional and shed a tear,” recounted the director.

Asked why he was afraid of doing the sequel, Sunny clarified, “We made Gadar and people made it a huge hit. So, there’s always a fear about touching a massive hit film and that’s why I was afraid of doing Gadar 2.”

“I hope Gadar 2 also touches your hearts and becomes as successful as Gadar because love is the biggest power,” he added.

Produced by Zee Studios, Anil Sharma Productions and MM Movies, Gadar 2 is directed by Anil Sharma and will release on August 11.
