Amazon Prime Video has given the green signal for the Tomb Raider series written and executive produced by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the streamer revealed during its Amazon Upfronts presentation on Tuesday at Pier 36 in New York City.
The series is an adaptation of the popular Tomb Raider video game, which chronicles the exploits of archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.
“The legacy continues. Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics to expand the TOMB RAIDER universe. Phoebe Waller-Bridge set as Writer and Executive Producer for the new series coming to Prime Video,” Amazon MGM also posted on social media.
The Tomb Raider series is a result of a deal signed between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, initiated through dj2’s first-look deal with the studio. The arrangement aims to expand the Tomb Raider universe into series and films.
“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening, I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to bring it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ’n all,” Phoebe Waller-Bridge said in a statement.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, also expressed her excitement about the project. “I’m so happy to announce that we have ordered the epic, globetrotting series Tomb Raider from the incredibly gifted Emmy-award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the team at Crystal Dynamics. Fans and newcomers can look forward to exhilarating adventures that honor the legacy of this iconic character,” she said.
The Tomb Raider series is produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios. Executive producers include Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robbins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment, and Michael Scheel. Amanda Greenblatt and Ryan Andolina are consulting producers under their Star Party banner.
