Amazon Prime Video has picked up the worldwide streaming rights for Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Farrelly’s upcoming comedy film Ricky Stanicky.
Amazon Studios took to Twitter to announce the news on Wednesday late evening. “Let your imagination run wild! Ricky Stanicky, Peter Farrelly's latest comedy, has been acquired by @primevideo,” it tweeted.
The streamer, however, is yet to confirm the movie’s digital premiere date.
The Dumb and Dumber director’s latest comedy features Jermaine Fowler of Coming 2 America fame, Baywatch’s Zac Efron and John Cena of Bumblebee.
Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena also tweeted about the announcement. “Beyond excited to help bring these characters to life (both on and off screen) with an incredible cast, our director and producers and partners at @AmazonStudios @primevideo. #RickyStanicky is a best friend to all — can’t wait for you to meet him!” he wrote, sharing the post by Amazon Studios.
Rick Stanicky chronicles three friends who invented a character to get out of tricky situations, but they have to hire a washed-up actor to portray their fictional friend when their partners become suspicious.
The script of Ricky Stanicky is penned by Farrelly, Brian Jarvis and Jim Freeman and is based on an original spec script by Jeff Bushnell and Steve Oedekerk. The film is produced by Paul Currie, Thorsten Schumacher and John Jacobs.
Apart from Dumb and Dumber, Farrelly has also helmed several other comedies such as Shallow Hal, Kingpin, Hall Pass and There’s Something About Mary. The 66-year-old filmmaker showed his dramatic directing chops with the best picture Oscar-winner Green Book, which starred Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen as a Black concert pianist and his Italian-American driver, respectively.
Fowler most recently starred in Hulu’s comedy The Drop, while Efron starred in Apple TV+’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever directed by Farrelly. Cena was recently seen in the lead role of HBO Max’s DC superhero series Peacemaker.
