A group of Punjabi village women break into a dance and express themselves while going about their daily household chores in the music video of Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila song Naram Kaalja, which offers a glimpse of Diljit Dosanjh as the titular singer and Parineeti Chopra as his wife.

Dropped by the makers on Thursday, the two-minute-52-second-long video begins with Diljit and Parineeti walking past a village woman who comments that the lyrics of the former’s songs are offensive to women. When she asks an elderly woman about her opinion on Chamkila’s music, the latter breaks it to her that she listens to his songs secretly. The women, having been inspired by the old woman, covertly play a cassette of Chamkila’s songs and dance along to the beats of on their terraces and farm fields in Punjab.

Diljit and Parineeti also feature in the video. The former, who is accompanied by his on-screen wife Amarjot Kaur (Parineeti), brims with energy while performing his songs in front of a local gathering.

Sung by Alka Yagnik alongside Richa Sharma, Pooja Tiwari, and Yashika Sikka, Naram Kaalja is penned by Irshad Kamil, known for writing the lyrics of the Jab We Met songs Ye Ishq Hai and Tum Se Hi, the Aakrosh song Saude Bazi and the recently released Bade Miyan Chote Miyan title track.

The music for Naram Kaalja is directed by AR Rahman. While Paras Nath has played the flute in the song, Keith Peters has served as the bassist.

“Chamkila mere andar bhi bole sada 🔥 💃 #NaramKaalja out now! #AmarSinghChamkilaOnNetflix 12th April,” Parineeti wrote alongside a poster of the song on Instagram.

The film is a biopic on Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, the highest record-selling Indian artiste of the 1980s. The singer, who was killed at 27 along with his wife and two members of his band, shot to fame with his song Takue Te Takua and went on to deliver several hits.
