Alia Bhatt championed Indian craftsmanship on the Met Gala 2024 red carpet in New York on Monday night (Tuesday morning in India) in a stunning Sabyasachi sari crafted by 163 artisans, paying homage to this year’s The Garden of Time dress code. On Monday night, the 31-year-old actress ascended the famed steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art donning a floral mint green sari crafted by couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Embellished with pearls, crystals and frills, the sari was complemented by an embroidered blouse elegantly tied in a bow at the back.

Upholding the sari as a symbol of tradition and innovation, Alia paid tribute to the intricate craftsmanship that has gone into making it. “It has taken a collective effort of 163 dedicated individuals, including master craftspeople, embroiderers, artists, and dyers, investing a total of 1965-man hours to create this ethereal saree,” wrote Alia on Instagram, expressing her gratitude for the “boundless love and painstaking effort.”

“We embraced a delicate nostalgia for hair and makeup – an elevated coiffure embellished with intricately woven braids and soft freckles – a homage to time’s gentle caress,” wrote the Jigra actress. Alia’s look was styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania; Dolly Jain draped the sari.

Alia emphasised how fashion trends from the past can inspire modern-day clothing. Her ensemble showcased exquisite hand embroidery, precious stones, elegant beadwork and fringes, reminiscent of the distinctive fringe style of the 1920s. The pastel colour palette paid tribute to the beauty of nature, reflecting the hues of the earth, sky and sea.
