Filmmaker Amit Sharma’s sports biopic Maidaan starring Ajay Devgn has become the first Hindi movie to release theatrically in Uruguay, he announced on Monday.
“#Maidaan creates history by being the first Hindi movie to be released in Uruguay,” the 44-year-old director wrote alongside a picture of spectators posing in front of a poster of the film at a theatre in Uruguay.
Sharma also shared a close-up shot of a poster of Maidaan and a glimpse from the film’s screening at a theatre.
Maidaan revolves around football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, played by Devgn, who pledges to achieve a near-impossible goal of making a football team of underdogs for the Asian Games. It traces the journey of the football coach who gathered players from all over India in the 1950s and created a world-class team ready to compete on an international level.
Known as “the architect of modern Indian football”, Rahim guided the Indian national team to unprecedented success during the 1950s, which led the Indian team to several triumphs, including gold medals in the Asian Games of 1951 and 1962.
Also starring Jawan actress Priyamani, Maidaan has been written by Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah. With music scored by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Manoj Muntashir Shukla, the film released in theatres globally on Eid this year.
