Ajay Devgn and Tabu-starrer Bholaa registered a double-digit opening day collection but fell short of the Day 1 earnings of the duo’s last theatrical release Drishyam 2, which hit theatres last year in November.

According to Box Office India, Bholaa earned Rs 10 crore on its Day 1 in theatres against Drishyam 2’s opening day collection of Rs 15.38 crore. The Ajay-directed action thriller released in over 4,000 screens across India on Thursday.

Ajay’s last outing as a director was the 2022 flight drama Runway 34 which hadn’t performed well at the domestic box office. It registered a lifetime collection of Rs 32.96 crore nett.

Despite Thursday being a holiday in many parts of the country, Bholaa’s opening day earnings were not up to the mark, say trade analysts. With the IPL 2023 season starting tonight, it could get harder for the film to draw audiences to theatres.

Bholaa, however, has raked in more money on Day 1 than Kartik Aaryan-starrer Shehzada (Rs 7 crore nett) and Akshay Kumar’s Selfiee (Rs 2.5 crore nett). Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s romantic comedy Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (Rs 15.73 crore) and Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan (Rs 57 crore nett) have reported the highest opening day collection in 2023 so far.

An adaptation of the 2019 Tamil film Kaithi, Bholaa is clashing at the box office with Nani's Dasara, Silambarasan-starrer Pathu Thala and Chris Pine-Hugh Grant-starrer Dungeons & Dragons.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Rani Mukherji-starrer Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway, and Keanu Reeves-starrer John Wick: Chapter 4 are also running successfully at the theatres.
