A kidnapped adolescent girl unleashes her wrath on her abductors as she turns into a ‘ballerina vampire’ in the gory and jump-scare-filled trailer of upcoming horror drama film Abigail, dropped by Universal Pictures on Thursday.

The two minutes-forty-six-second-long trailer begins by introducing a young ballerina, Abigail, who is kidnapped from her residence by a group of adept criminals demanding USD 50 million ransom from her affluent father.

Soon after Abigail befriends one of her kidnappers, Joey, the crime thriller morphs into a blood-curdling vampire hunt.

“I’m sorry about what’s going to happen to you,” Abigail warns her new friend, leading the abductors to realise that the little girl they have in their possession is a vicious vampire. Trapped inside an isolated mansion, they strive to save their lives from the supernatural force employing methods that seem to draw on Bram Stoker’s classic Nosferatu novel Dracula.

Armed with garlic and a wooden stake, the kidnappers attempt to kill the ballerina vampire who can fly and get past locked doors.

Enriched with jump scares and unsettling visuals, the trailer features a bathtub full of carcasses, a taxidermized bear and a headless ballet dancer. The eerie setting and tone, intensified by an eldritch screech at the end, promises an immersive viewing experience.

Touted as “a brash, blood-thirsty new vision of the vampire flick”, Abigail is helmed by the Ready or Not and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

The film stars Alisha Weir (from Matthew Warchus’s Matilda the Musical) as the eponymous protagonist and Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett and Angus Cloud as the kidnappers.

The story is jointly penned by The Hole in the Ground (2019) writer Stephen Shields and Scream writer Guy Busick.

Abigail is slated to release theatrically in the US on April 19.
