The upcoming film Porichoy Gupta, which, as its title suggests, is about hidden identities, is expected to be a suspenseful film with a paranormal angle. However, the songs from its soundtrack are soulful, romantic numbers that offset to some extent the film’s mysterious, murky atmosphere.

Akarone jolchobite, a song from the film that has been shared on social media, is a melancholy, heart-touching love song. Its video is a collage of disjointed moments stitched together to tell a story of agony, heartbreak, betrayal and lost love. As seen already in the trailer of the film, the setting of the song recalls an old time period, perhaps in a zamindar’s mansion of the early to mid-20th century.

As evident from his sartorial preferences, Ritwick Chakraborty’s character is of aristocratic heritage and is possibly the landlord of the estate. A blind man, he plays the cello, and bears the mark of a man of wealth and distinction. Indraneil Sengupta’s character is a visitor to the mansion and arrives in a vintage car to meet the blind landlord. Darshana Banik who plays the role of the landlord’s wife, is painted as a more complex, dishonest person in the song. Taking advantage of her husband’s disability, she has an illicit love affair with a man who is known to her husband, sharing moments of intimacy with her lover in her husband’s home. Later though, she is also seen having a spat with her lover.

Perhaps the most interesting character who makes an appearance in the video is a transvestite (Joy Sengupta). As the song plays out, she can be glimpsed moving suspiciously about the house, eavesdropping or peering cautiously into rooms, trying to gather information. It is possible that she nurtures a dark secret or conceals a sorrow.

Sung by Subhasish Samaddar, with music and lyrics by Subhendu Adhikary, the three-minute song generates a poignant, almost tragic mood that resonates with the video’s atmosphere of sadness, loneliness and desolation, besides offering a glimpse into the background of the plot of Porichoy Gupta. Directed by debutant filmmaker Ron Raj and with its story and screenplay by Ayantika Banerjee, Porichoy Gupta, originally slated for release in September, will now hit the big screen on November 15.
