Production has commenced on the Game of Thrones spinoff series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in Ireland, the makers announced on Tuesday. The new spinoff prequel will be based on George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight.

“Set a century before #GameOfThrones, the new @HBO Original drama series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is now in production. Coming soon to @StreamOnMax,” the official handle of Game of Thrones posted on X.

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will chronicle the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), occurring about 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones and 100 years after House of the Dragon. Their journey leads them to a tournament where they meet several members of the Targaryen dynasty, including Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett), Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), and Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell).

Other characters they encounter include Ser Lyonel Baratheon, known as the Laughing Storm (Daniel Ings), and a puppeteer named Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford).

Lessons In Chemistry director Sarah Adina Smith is set to helm three out of the six episodes for the first season, with executive producer Owen Harris directing the remaining episodes.

The series is penned and executive produced by Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris and Sarah Bradshaw also serve as executive producers.

The official synopsis for the series reads, “A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
