S.S. Rajamouli has been moved by a heartfelt gesture from an 83-year-old Japanese woman, who presented 1,000 origami cranes to the filmmaker as a token of appreciation for his 2022 epic period action film RRR.
Sharing the touching gesture on Instagram on Monday, the 50-year-old filmmaker posted pictures of him and the elderly woman in Tokyo, Japan.
“In #Japan, they make origami cranes and gift them to their loved ones for good luck and health. This 83-year-old woman made 1000 of them to bless us because #RRR made her happy,” he wrote in the caption.
“She just sent the gift and was waiting outside in the cold,” noted Rajamouli, adding, “Some gestures can never be repaid”.
The carousel shows Rajamouli standing next to the woman as he holds the paper cranes in his hand. One of the pictures features Rajamouli’s wife Rama Rajamouli embracing the woman. The final picture of the series captures a note attached by the elderly fan to the gift. “I am 83 years old. I wanna dance with RRR every day. I made it one by one. Welcome to Japan,” reads the note.
In Japanese folklore, the crane is a majestic bird that is said to live for a thousand years. It is a symbol of honour, good fortune, loyalty and longevity. The Japanese believe that anyone with the patience and commitment to fold 1,000 origami cranes would be granted a wish.
RRR stars Jr. NTR and Ram Charan in lead roles alongside an ensemble cast featuring Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody and Olivia Morris. The storyline of the film revolves around two Indian revolutionaries fighting against the British Raj.
The song Naatu Naatu from the film made history by winning the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards. Additionally, the film earned nominations at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, including a nomination for Best Foreign Language. At the 69th National Film Awards, the movie received six accolades, including Best Popular Feature Film and Best Male Playback Singer for Kaala Bhairava’s rendition of Komuram Bheemudo.
Produced by D. V. V. Danayya of DVV Entertainment, RRR was released theatrically on March 25, 2022.
