Popular shows Beef, Succession and The Bear emerged as big winners across the television categories at the 81st Golden Globe Awards held on January 8 in Los Angeles. Here’s a look at the winners.

Netflix’s Beef shines with first-time winners

Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, co-stars of Netflix's acclaimed limited series Beef, took home their first Golden Globe awards. Wong received the honour for Best Actress in a Limited Series, while Yeun bagged the Best Actor in a Limited Series trophy. Wong expressed gratitude to her ex-husband Justin Hakuta for his love and support as a working mother. Steven Yeun, in his victory speech, compared winning the award to the plot of Frozen amidst applause from his peers.

Netflix's Beef also won the Best Limited Series award. Lee Sung Jin, the creator of the show, revealed that a real road-rage incident inspired the show, thanking the driver responsible in a humorous take.

Debicki and Macfadyen win for supporting roles

Elizabeth Debicki, who portrayed Princess Diana in the Netflix show The Crown, won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a TV Show. During her speech she expressed her gratitude to the makers. Matthew Macfadyen, honoured as best supporting television actor for Succession, streaming on JioCinema, playfully referred to his character as a "weird and wonderful human grease stain".

The Bear roars loud in comedy categories

Jeremy Allen White clinched his second consecutive victory for best actor in a television comedy at the 2024 Golden Globes for The Bear, streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. Expressing gratitude to his team, he said, “I love this show. I love you guys so much. I must have done something right in this life to be in your company.”

White’s co-star Ayo Edebiri, in her maiden nomination and win speech, acknowledged the room full of admired individuals whose work had been a source of inspiration. “I’m an artist, I’m very lucky to be an artist. I really want to acknowledge that,” she said.

The momentum continued as The Bear secured the Globe for the best comedy series, completing a triumphant sweep in the comedy categories. Lionel Bryce, who portrays Marcus, graciously accepted the award on behalf of the show's cast and crew. In his acceptance speech, Bryce expressed gratitude to the entire restaurant community, recognising the dedication and challenges they face daily.

Ricky Gervais bags the first-ever standup comedy award

Ricky Gervais, a former Golden Globes host, secured the first-ever award for TV standup comedy. Gervais was represented by Jim Gaffigan, who accepted the award on his behalf, quipping about overpayment thanks to Netflix.

Succession takes home the best drama trophy

The acclaimed HBO show Succession secured the Golden Globe in the best drama series category, triumphing over strong contenders such as The Crown, The Diplomat, and Last of Us. The show’s cast members Matthew Macfadyen and Sarah Snook clinched victories in the Best Supporting Male Actor-Television and Best Television Female Actor – Drama Series categories, respectively. In a lighthearted moment, Culkin directed a playful remark towards fellow nominee Pedro Pascal, stating, "Take that, Pedro. This one's mine."
