It’s been almost two weeks since its release but Season 2 of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives is showing no signs of climbing down from the first five on Netflix’s Top 10 shows in India.
We all have our guilty pleasures that we keep going back to. This show from Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment — trending at no. 4 on Netflix — is one such cringefest which is so bad that it is good. The ‘Fantastic Four’ group of friends are back after a gap of two years. And more glam and glitz, heavier accent and unabashed drama mark this season of India’s answer to American TV’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
Maheep Kapoor (wife of Sanjay Kapoor), Neelam Kothari (wife of Samir Soni), Bhavana Pandey (wife of Chunky Panday) and Seema Sajdeh (separated from Sohail Khan) are louder, gaudier and more insecure in Season 2. Despite the friction among the members, their friendship is stronger than ever.
Here are the best moments from the season:
Is Antelope a person?
The first season saw the four making a trip to Dubai. The pandemic played spoiler in the second season, although the friends do go on a mini vacation — this time to Jawai in Rajasthan for a jungle safari. Here they are, in the middle of the jungle, trying to spot a leopard, when their guide informs the group that he can hear distress calls from an antelope. Which means, a leopard might be nearby. Trust Seema to bring in some comic relief in such a tense situation. She is seen casually asking Maheep, is ‘antelope’ the name of a person?
Karan Johar’s FOMO
Dogged by accusations of nepotism for promoting star kids over genuine talent, Karan Johar seems to have taken all the criticism in his stride. He courted yet another controversy by revealing in one of the episodes of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives that he desperately wants to join a chat group which includes Suhana Khan (Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan’s daughter), Ananya Panday (Chunky and Bhavana’s daughter), Shanaya Kapoor (Sanjay and Maheep’s daughter), and Navya Naveli Nanda (Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter).
Seema vs Seema
Seema Sajdeh has separated from Sohail Khan. In the beginning of the Season 2, we see her drop ‘Khan’ from the nameplate of her home. As the season progresses, her friends — especially Maheep — try to find her a soulmate. There is a lot of Tinder and Bumble talk, until the OG ‘Indian Matchmaker’ Seema Taparia makes an entry. The battle of nerves between Seema (Sajdeh) and Seema (Taparia) as the two fight over the idea of marriage makes for a good popcorn binge. At one point, Taparia says if one can wait at an airport if a flight is delayed, why can’t they adjust in their relationship. This is where the other Seema loses it.
Ranveer Singh’s posterior
Season 2 of Bollywood Wives has many cameos. The best cameo, if one asks me, is definitely Ranveer Singh’s bum. Saving the best for the last episode, the makers go unabashedly overboard in exploring the desires of the four ladies. Ranveer Singh is the boy the women lust for.
They decide to drop by the sets of Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani where Ranveer is shooting for Karan Johar. It is a scene where Ranveer wakes up in his bed in shiny red underpants, and then takes a steamy shower. Later in a tete-a-tete with Ranveer, Maheep shows she is smitten by Deepika’s charming husband, and even the more poised Neelam drops her guard.
Neelam has an admirer
In Episode 6 of Season 2, on their trip to Jawai to rejuvenate their connection with nature, the ladies meet Jaisal Singh, founder of Sujan Jawai, who accompanies them on a safari. A thorough gentleman, Jaisal Singh is attentive to the needs of his guests. One of them in particular. Jaisal Singh makes no effort in hiding the fact that he’s besotted by Neelam. From friendly banter to holding her portable fan, his gestures spark a chatter among the rest of the gang. Neelam enjoys the attention too.
Menopause and designer vaginas
Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives is not just about fashion, glitz and glamour. The opening episode has the gang meeting gynecologist Kiran Coelho to discuss the various aspects of menopause. The wives have many questions, which Coelho answers patiently, especially about “designer vaginas”.
Of flowers and lady gardens
Maheep receives an offer to feature in an ad to endorse a menopause pill. And she wants her friends to be a part of it too. But Seema refuses point blank because she is “too young” to endorse such a product. Meanwhile, Neelam is uncomfortable uttering the word ‘vagina’. If you think that’s weird, wait till you hear the script for the ad. Bhavana puts her foot down when she learns about her lines: “My lady garden does not flower anymore”. Can it get any more cringe than this?
Gauri Khan — the fifth ‘Fabulous Wife’?
The second season of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives sees a lot of Gauri Khan. The finale episode of the first season was centred around a gala party hosted by Shah Rukh and Gauri. In this season, the OG Bollywood wife makes several appearances. And there’s a lot of branding too. One full episode is dedicated to a photoshoot for Gauri’s interior designing business. Is she going to join the gang full time in the next season?
