From Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder getting a mixed response at the box office to Tom Cruise’s return in Top Gun: Maverick after a gap of 36 years breaking several records, the first seven months of the year 2022 were quite eventful for Hollywood.

The first half of 2022 – which also saw Robert Pattinson don Batman’s cape for The Batman and Chris Pratt return in The Jurassic World Dominion – has been a mixed bag in terms of box office success and how the global audience responded to star power. The remaining months of the year, however, have a lot in store for cinephiles.

We take a look at seven non-superhero Hollywood films to look forward to in 2022.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Daniel Craig is returning as Detective Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Rian Johnson’s follow-up to his hit 2019 murder mystery, Knives Out.

This time, Detective Blanc travels to Greece to peel the layers of a mystery, the star cast for which includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will release by the end of 2022 in select theatres and then on Netflix.

Blonde

A new biopic of Marilyn Monroe promises a fresh look at the Hollywood legend. The Gray Man actress Ana de Armas stars as Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s Blonde. The film is an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, which is based on the life and career of Monroe, who became a star in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Blonde will explore both the known and unknown aspects of Monroe’s complicated personal and professional life. The film also stars Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Xavier Samuel and Julianne Nicholson. Blonde will premiere on Netflix on September 28.

Amsterdam

Starring Margot Robbie, Christian Bale and John David Washington, Academy Award-nominated director David O Russell’s Amsterdam is one of the most awaited films of 2022. Amsterdam looks like an edgy thriller set in the 1930s, revolving around three close friends who find themselves at the centre of one of the most shocking secret plots in American history.

The cast is packed with a lot of stars – there’s Robert De Niro, Chris Rock, Taylor Swift, Anya Taylor-Joy, Mike Myers, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana, Timothy Olyphant and Michael Shannon, will hit the theatres on November 4.

The Whale

Darren Aronofsky is making a comeback, after 2017’s Mother, with the drama The Whale. Brendan Fraser, known for his stint in The Mummy franchise, is returning to the silver screen with this film. The Whale is an adaptation of playwright Samuel D. Hunter’s stage play of the same name.

The plot revolves around Charlie (Fraser), a reclusive English teacher suffering from a compulsive eating disorder, who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, Elle (played by Stranger Things breakout star Sadie Sink). The Whale, also starring Hong Chau, Samantha Morton and Ty Simpkins, will release by the end of the year.

The Banshees of Inisherin

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh, who previously directed Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, is going to be back with The Banshees of Inisherin.

The film follows Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly ends their friendship. Gleeson is reuniting with McDonagh after 14 years since the release of In Bruges.

Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon also play important roles in this dark, wicked comedy that will hit the theatres on October 21.

The Menu

Mark Mylod’s hilarious dark comedy, The Menu, stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes. Mylod is known for films such as Ali G Indahouse, What’s Your Number? and The Big White.

The film has the funny but unsettling premise of a young couple visiting an exclusive restaurant on a remote island, where the restaurant owner – a mysterious chef (Fiennes) — starts attacking the diners. The Menu will arrive in the theatres on November 18.

Babylon

Director Damien Chazelle’s upcoming film Babylon is a star-studded homage to Hollywood’s golden era. It brings together Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as a silent film star and a Roaring Twenties icon, respectively. Diego Calva and Tobey Maguire will be seen in supporting roles.

Babylon is set in the late 1920s during the movie industry’s transition from silent films to talkies. Chazelle, who is the youngest director to win the best director Oscar for La La Land, is returning after his 2018 space film First Man. Babylon is scheduled to release by the end of 2022, but the makers are yet to confirm a theatrical release date.
