7 box office flops that are doing well on Netflix, Prime Video and Zee5

Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Tapsee Pannu and Aditya Roy Kapoor frontlined these films

Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated Laal Singh Chaddha may have bombed at the box office but it’s currently trending at no. 3 on Netflix’s top 10 films in India. The reversal of fate for this big-budget Bollywood film echoes the turnaround that a slew of recent box-office flops have seen on various OTT platforms.

We pick seven films that did poorly at the cinemas but have done remarkably well on OTT.

Jersey

A sports drama directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the Shahid Kapoor-Mrunal Thakur-starrer Jersey is a remake of Tinnauri’s 2019 Telugu hit of the same name. It follows Arjun Talwar (Shahid), a former cricketer who quit the game for personal reasons at the peak of his career. Now out of work because of an ongoing inquiry about some malpractice at the workplace, Arjun silently suffers the ignominy of unemployment. His son, also passionate about cricket, wants to buy a cricket jersey, forcing Arjun to come out of retirement. His decision sours Arjun’s relationship with his wife Vidya (Mrunal).

Jersey has solid performances by Shahid and Mrunal, and the cricket action is well choreographed. The movie had a worldwide gross collection of Rs 27.12 crore, clashing with another biggie like KGF.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar

Directed by Divyang Thakkar and produced by Yash Raj Films, Jayeshbhai Jordaar uses comedy to raise awareness about female foeticide. Ranveer Singh plays Jayesh, whose overbearing parents (Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah) make life choices for him. When Jayesh learns that his wife is going to give birth to their second daughter, he takes extreme steps to save the baby.

Ranveer is flamboyant as Jayesh, while Boman as the misogynist and chauvinistic father will give you the creeps. Ratna’s transformation from the servile, dutiful wife to a woman who stands up for herself is applause-worthy. But it is Jia Vaidya who steals the show as Jayesh’s elder daughter.

Khuda Haafiz: Chapter 2 – Agni Pariksha

Written and directed by Faruk Kabir, this is a sequel to the 2020 film Khuda Haafiz. In Chapter 2 – Agni Pariksha, the story of Sameer (Vidyut Jammwal) and Nargis (Shivaleeka Oberoi) moves forward as the couple adopt a girl, Nandini. But they do not get to live happily ever after as Nandini gets kidnapped on her way back from school. Sameer is raring to go to any lengths to bring her back home safely.

Faruk Kabir devotes the entire first half of the film to establish an emotional story about a happy family. The second half is a testosterone-fuelled action thriller with plenty of blood and violence. After its premiere on ZEE5, the film became one of the trending content on the platform.

Rashtra Kavach OM

Directed by Kapil Verma, Rashtra Kavach OM was panned by critics for taking absurdity in storytelling to a whole new level. Starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjana Sanghi, the film talks about a possible shield against a nuclear attack — a rashtra kavach — the formula for which is being developed by scientist Dev Rathore (Jackie Shroff). he mysteriously disappears one day and is suspected to be a traitor. The rest of the plot hinges on solving the mystery of this disappearance and retrieving the kavach. While the film suffered at the box office, it went on to become the one of the most-watched films on ZEE5 after its digital premiere.

Shabaash Mithu

Directed by Srijit Mukherji, the film chronicles the life of Mithali Raj, the former Test and ODI captain of India’s women’s national cricket. Starring Taapsee Pannu as Mithali, the film not only tells us the story of the cricketing legend but also highlights the obstacles that women cricketers face in real life. In a marked departure from the convention for biopics, the film does not deify Mithu or eulogise her. Shabaash Mithu was among the top trending content on Netflix after its digital release.

Attack: Part 1

This science-fiction, action thriller directed by Lakshya Raj Anand stars John Abraham and Rakul Preet Singh. It is the story of Arjun Shergill, an Indian army officer, who loses his motor skills in a terrorist attack. The government, which is developing a secret supersoldier programme, wants Arjun to become a volunteer for human trials. Even as the trials are in progress, there is a terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament and the Prime Minister is taken hostage. It falls on Arjun’s shoulders to rescue the PM. Attack: Part 1 was one of the trending content on ZEE5 after its OTT premiere.

Laal Singh Chaddha

The official remake of Oscar-winning Hollywood film Forrest Gump, this directorial by Advait Chandan took four years to complete. Starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan as Laal Singh Chaddha and Rupa, the film follows the journey of Laal from his childhood as he witnesses several landmark events in history. One of the most-awaited films of 2022, Laal Singh Chaddha failed to make a mark at the box office. Following a lacklustre digital premiere on Netflix, the movie soon became one of the top 10 trending content on the platform.
