She has won the Grammy 11 times and her most recent album Midnights made her the first-ever singer in history to occupy the entire Billboard Top 10 chart in a single week. Taylor Swift, who turns 33 today, is quite matchless in what she does and we Swifties can’t have enough of her soul-stirring music. Here are our top five songs from her 10th album Midnights — which contains 13 songs — that you can listen to on Taylor’s birthday.

Anti-Hero

The third song of the album, Anti-Hero dives into the self-sabotaging emotions that make us blame ourselves for every unpleasant experience. Describing the song, Taylor had said, “I struggle a lot with the idea that my life has become unmanageable and not feeling like a person.” The video of Anti-Hero was also scripted and directed by Taylor, who wanted to show her intrusive thoughts through the song.

It shows Taylor struggling with different challenges of her life while trying to manage her mental health. A second Taylor appears in the music video declaring, ‘I’m the problem, it’s me’, showing Taylor’s personal struggle with villainising herself. The song explores how we become the anti-heroes of our own lives.

Vigilante Shit

A vengeful song, Vigilante Shit could be your next favourite breakup song. With lyrics like Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie, the eighth song of the album is a slow but memorable number.

While the video for the song isn’t out yet, Vigilante Shit captures the essence of the idea of revenge. Taylor’s talent as a songwriter shines through in the lines, I don’t dress for women/I don’t dress for men/Lately I’ve been dressing for revenge.

It is rumoured the song was written about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian due to the fallout between the now-divorced couple and Taylor.

Bejeweled

Bejeweled, the ninth song of the album, is a jibe at unsupportive and unappreciative partners. The music video, also scripted and directed by Swift, is an unconventional take on the fairytale of Cinderella. The song is filled with cameos by celebrities including actress Laura Dern and burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese, who also featured in Don’t Worry Darling.

The shimmery and dazzling music video is filled with countless Easter Eggs including one that hints at the re-release of Enchanted. Taylor takes on the role of Cinderella but twists the narrative where she rejects the prince’s proposal for marriage and instead becomes the Queen all by herself.

Karma

The 11th song, Karma, is all about an unbothered state of mind. Taylor is a huge believer in karma — the idea that the sum of a person’s actions decides their fate. Taylor had revealed that the album would be a compilation of her thoughts during the wee hours of night, as the album title suggests. Karma, with quirky lyrics like Karma is a cat, is almost a love letter written by Taylor to show how she views karma in her life — “a relaxing thought”.

Mastermind

The last and 13th song of the album is Mastermind, a number that sounds borderline vengeful but is more about Taylor wanting to argue that women need to be calculative to survive. Personal and political statements make up the lyrics of Mastermind along with lookbacks on her previous songs.

The song is also a nod to Taylor’s love story with her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn and how they met for the first time during the 2016 Met Gala.
