Shah Rukh Khan is another name for romance since the 1990s, but there have been times when King Khan has tapped into his comedic genius and brought hilarity to the fore. We pick our favourite comedy films where SRK had us in splits.

Chamatkar (1992)

Directed by Rajiv Mehra, this fantasy comedy film features Shah Rukh in the role of village school teacher Sundar, who is duped by his friend in Mumbai. After being robbed of all his belongings, Sundar seeks shelter in a graveyard, where he befriends a ghost (Naseeruddin Shah). Khan looks and lives his character as a simpleton in the film and wins hearts with his adorable innocence. Long before he became a romantic icon for the masses, Shah Rukh showed that he excels at comedy as well.

Duplicate (1998)

Mahesh Bhatt’s Duplicate is one of those cult classics that one secretly binges on weekends. A guilty-pleasure, this no-brainer comedy features Shah Rukh in a double role. He plays the hero, Baloo, an honest chef, and his unscrupulous doppelganger Manu. Their paths cross when Baloo is arrested, being mistaken for Manu. What follows is a comedy of errors. The film rests on Shah Rukh’s shoulders as he pulls off both the roles with elan.

Baadshah (1999)

Baadshah is a comedy about small-time detective Raj (Shah Rukh). Helmed by Abbas-Mustan, the film also features Twinkle Khanna, Amrish Puri and Rakhee. In a hilarious twist, Raj is mistaken as a CBI agent and gets embroiled in a deadly mission to save the chief minister from an assassination attempt. Shah Rukh’s infectious energy lifts an ordinary script to a rib-tickling comedy.

Main Hoon Na (2005)

Shah Rukh slipped into the character of Indian Army Major Ram Prasad Sharma in this Farah Khan romantic comedy set in Darjeeling. He must pose as a college student for an undercover mission. Ram’s stint in college, including his romantic feelings for Chemistry lecturer Chandni (Sushmita Sen), is hilarious. The film has it all — romance, action, melodrama, chartbuster songs and, of course, comedy. Playing Ram was a cakewalk for Shah Rukh, who proves, once again, why he is called King Khan.

Chennai Express (2013)

Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express is a blend of comedy, romance, action and adventure. The blockbuster, frontlined by Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, juxtaposes a love story against the barrier of cultural and ethnic identities. Shah Rukh’s Rahul, a young man, sets out to immerse his late grandfather’s ashes at Rameshwaram. However, when he helps Meena, played by Deepika, a runaway bride, board a train, he has to face the wrath of her family. Shah Rukh plays the usual romantic-hero avatar in the film with a dash of comedy. His comic timing was on point, which had the audience swooning over King Khan.
