The passing of Robbie Coltrane, who played the lovable half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter franchise, is a big loss to potterheads. In Coltrane’s own words from Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, “The legacy of the movies is that my children’s generation will show them to their children so you could be watching in 50 years time easy. I’ll not be here sadly but Hagrid will.”

We take a trip down memory lane to take a look at the five best moments of Hagrid from the Harry Potter film series.

“Yer a wizard, Harry” – Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Hagrid was the first person who brought Harry to the Dursleys after his parents were killed by the dark wizard. Naturally, he would be the first person to tell Harry about his magical roots. Visiting Harry for the first time, Hagrid literally breaks down the door of the hut where Vernon Dursley hid his family to stop Harry from getting his Hogwarts acceptance letter. He also brings a handmade cake with pink icing and green lettering to wish Harry on his 11th birthday. The half-giant quickly realises Harry doesn’t know anything about himself and declares, “Yer (You’re) a wizard, Harry,” much to the shock of the boy who lived.

Hagrid gives Harry the photo album – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

After Voldemort hijacked Professor Quirell’s body and Harry defeated him, it’s time for students to return home. Before the Hogwarts Express leaves the station, Hagrid, who happens to be the gamekeeper of the magical school, gives Harry a photo album with pictures of his parents. The two friends hug and then Harry leaves for the Dursley home. This emotional scene between the two never fails to leave us teary-eyed.

Hagrid consoles Hermione – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Draco Malfoy calls Hermione Granger a ‘mudblood’ following the rumours that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened. The derogatory term, used to insult wizards and witches without magical parents, leaves Hermione all shaken. Hagrid shows his kindness yet again as he consoles Hermione by saying, “Don’t you think on it for one minute”.

Hagrid returns to Hogwarts – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Hagrid makes a comeback from Azkaban, the dreaded prison of the wizarding world, after being wrongly accused of opening the Chamber of Secrets. The half-giant walks in through the doors of the main hall and thanks the trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione for clearing his name. Harry then says, “There’s no Hogwarts without you, Hagrid,” making the entire hall erupt in claps for Hagrid.

Hagrid introduces Buckbeak to the class – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

After being made the new Professor of the Care of Magical Creatures at Hogwarts, Hagrid introduces the students to a Hippogriff named Buckbeak. He shows Harry how to become friends with the magical creature, giving us a beautiful moment between Harry and Buckbeak as they fly over Hogwarts. Later in the film, Harry and Hermione would go on to save Buckbeak from the executioner’s blade.
