Christopher Nolan's biographical thriller Oppenheimer dominated the nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards with 13 nods on Thursday, while Barbie maker Greta Gerwig missed out on the nominations for the best director in a development that has left many fans shocked.
Yorgos Lanthimos' steampunk black comedy, Poor Things, closely followed Oppenheimer with 11 nominations, including a nod for Best Film and a leading actress nomination for Emma Stone.
Despite being tied for the most longlist slots with Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie only secured five nominations, missing out on crucial categories such as Best Film and Best Director. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling did earn recognition for their performances but failed to carry the film into the major categories.
Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest received nine nominations each, but both the filmmakers were notably absent from the Best Director category. Lily Gladstone's omission in the leading actress category for Killers of the Flower Moon also raised eyebrows.
However, not all surprises were disappointments for fans. Justine Triet's Palme d'Or winner, Anatomy of a Fall, made an impressive mark with seven nominations. Triet herself secured a nomination for Best Director, standing as the sole woman on the six-strong list.
Cord Jefferson's satire American Fiction and Michael Mann's Ferrari earned one nomination each, for adapted screenplay and sound, respectively. Andrew Scott's acclaimed performance in All of Us Strangers failed to land him a nomination, and Todd Haynes' May December missed out on nominations despite early contender expectations.
The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 18 at London's Royal Festival Hall, with Doctor Who star David Tennant set to host the event.
