The year 2022 was rough for Bollywood with several big-budget films failing to do well at the box office. While many low-budget productions managed to draw viewers to theatres and receive rave reviews, audiences seemed unimpressed by commercial films led by some of the most popular stars. As we await the Ranveer Singh-starrer Cirkus — the year’s last big Bollywood film, releasing today — here’s a look at 14 Bollywood films of 2022 that tanked at the box office despite their star power.

Bachchhan Paandey (released on March 18)

Akshay Kumar’s first release of the year saw the actor team up with Kriti Sanon for the action comedy. Directed by Farhad Samji, Bachchhan Paandey had a decent opening, earning Rs 13 crore on Day 1. However, this official remake of the Tamil film Jigarthanda couldn’t continue its run at the box office as it clashed with The Kashmir Files and RRR, both of which ran away with the moolah. Bachchhan Paandey ended up collecting Rs 49 crore nett in the domestic market, and couldn’t recover its reported budget of Rs 165 crore.

Jersey (released on April 19)

Shahid Kapoor-and-Mrunal Thakur-starrer Jersey, a remake of Gowtam Tinnanuri’s Telugu hit of the same name, received mixed reviews from critics and viewers. The sports drama, featuring Shahid as a cricketer, was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 80 crore. Jersey, however, managed to earn only Rs 18 crore nett in the domestic market. The film’s release clashed with the Kannada blockbuster KGF: Chapter 2, which raised close to Rs 1,000 crore in India.

Heropanti 2 (released on April 29)

Tiger Shroff’s gravity-defying stunts and impressive dance moves couldn’t save Ahmed Khan’s Heropanti 2. Also starring Tara Sutaria, the film was a much-awaited sequel to the 2014 blockbuster Heropanti, also starring Tiger. Heropanti 2, reportedly made on a budget of Rs 70 crore, managed to earn a meagre Rs 24.91 crore nett in the domestic market.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar (released on May 13)

Featuring Ranveer Singh as a loving father, who believes in the equal rights of men and women, Jayeshbhai Jordaar was produced by Yash Raj Films on a budget of Rs 86 crore. The comedy drama dealt with the sensitive subject of female infanticide with a dash of humour but failed to bring the audience to the theatres. The Divyang Thakkar-directed film collected only Rs 26 crore nett at the box office.

Dhaakad (released on May 20)

Razneesh Ghai’s action thriller Dhaakad, frontlined by Kangana Ranaut, turned out to be one of the biggest flops of 2022. The Queen actress went out of her comfort zone to play a spy pursuing an international racket of human traffickers in this film. Despite being loaded with action stunts, Kangana’s film sank without a trace. Reportedly created on a budget of Rs 85 crore, Dhaakad raised Rs 2.5 crore nett at the box office.

Samrat Prithviraj (released on June 3)

Akshay Kumar forayed into the genre of period films with this historical drama from the YRF stable. He took up the box office battle in the garb of the Rajput warrior king Prithviraj Chauhan, but viewers were impressed neither with the film nor his portrayal. Former Miss World Manushi Chillar made her Bollywood debut with this film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi. Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 175 crore, Samrat Prithviraj earned only Rs 68 crore nett in India.

Shabaash Mithu (released on July 15)

Based on the life of former India women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj, Shabaash Mithu starred Taapsee Pannu in the titular role. Directed by Srijit Mukherji, the sports drama failed to hit the ball out of the park. Made on a budget of Rs 48 crore, Shabaash Mithu registered collections worth Rs 2.89 crore nett at the box office.

Shamshera (released on July 22)

Presenting a grand, larger-than-life look and feel and co-starring , Shamshera marked Ranbir Kapoor’s return to the big screen after four years. But Ranbir’s never-seen-before bandit avatar didn’t cut ice with the audience. Produced on a budget of Rs 145 crore by Yash Raj Films, Karan Malhotra’s period drama earned Rs 41.5 crore nett at the box office.

Laal Singh Chaddha (released on August 11)

One of the most anticipated films of 2022, Laal Singh Chaddha was touted as Aamir Khan’s big comeback on the silver screen after Dangal (2016). The official remake of Academy Award-winning Hollywood classic Forrest Gump (1994), Aamir’s period drama was in production for 14 long years. The filming itself took three years to finish. No wonder it was a rude shock when Laal Singh Chaddha – even with the cute chemistry between Aamir and Kareena Kapoor Khan — failed to charm audiences. Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 186 crore, Advait Chandan’s ambitious project earned only Rs 59 crore nett at the box office.

Raksha Bandhan (released on August 11)

Akshay Kumar teamed up with director Aanand L. Rai to tell the story of a brother’s bond with his four sisters in Raksha Bandhan. Made on a budget of Rs 100 crore, the film was criticised for its allegedly regressive tone. The comedy drama failed to capitalise on the extended Independence Day weekend, raising only Rs 45 crore nett at the box office.

Vikram Vedha (released on September 30)

A much-awaited remake of the 2017 Tamil film of the same name, Pushkar-Gayathri’s Vikram Vedha ticked all the boxes needed for a blockbuster. Headlined by Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan, the action thriller was the big Hindi release during the Durga Puja-Navratri week. Vikram Vedha, however, underperformed at the box office, collecting only Rs 78.6 crore nett in India, way below its budget of Rs 180 crore.

Goodbye (released on October 7)

Vikas Bahl’s family drama had piqued the interest of movie-goers for several reasons. The film marked the Bollywood debut of Telugu actress Rashmika Mandanna, who had become the nation’s crush post-Pushpa: The Rise (2021) starring Allu Arjun. Rashmika played Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter in Goodbye, and people were eager to experience their father-daughter chemistry on screen. Goodbye earned Rs 10 crore nett in the domestic market, failing to recover its budget of Rs 30 crore.

Ram Setu (released on October 25)

Director Abhishek Kumar’s action adventure film Ram Setu, with Akshay Kumar in the lead role, released across cinemas on Diwali. The film, also starring Jacqueline Fernandez and Nushrratt Bharuccha, was yet another addition to Akshay’s string of flops in 2022. Made on a staggering budget of Rs 150 crore, Ram Setu earned only Rs 71.87 crore nett in the domestic circuit.

An Action Hero (released on December 2)

Ayushmann Khurrana headlined an action film for the first time in his career with An Action Hero but failed to bowl his fans over. The Anirudh Iyer-directed film, also starring Jaideep Ahlawat, received mixed reviews from the critics. Made on a budget of Rs 30 crore, An Action Hero collected Rs 10 crore nett at the box office since its release on December 2.
