Actor Vikrant Massey’s retirement announcement on Monday has sparked a debate among social media users, with some fans backing his decision as a bold move and some terming it a publicity stunt ahead of a rumoured political career.
The 12th Fail star announced a retirement from acting on Monday at the age of 37, citing the need to “recalibrate and go back home” for his family. As per media reports, Vikrant is currently working on two films — Yaar Jigri and Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan. “So coming 2025, we will meet each other for one last time. Until time deems right,” he said, thanking fans for their immense support over the years.
Vikrant’s announcement comes following the November 15 release of his latest political thriller film The Sabarmati Report, which showcases the events that took place on Sabarmati Express near the Godhra railway station in Gujarat on the morning of February 27, 2002.
An X user shared a post, expressing their confusion over the announcement. “Vikrant Massey is actually leaving acting? Or is it a publicity stunt or smth😭?,” it reads.
“Remember! We'll report your account if this turns out to be some PR marketing stunt,” a fan on Instagram commented on Vikrant’s post.
Amidst criticism directed at the actor, YouTuber Akash Banerjee wished him all the best for his journey ahead. “Vikrant - you can always hit #restart Wishing you all the very best,” he commented with a nod to Vikrant’s 2023 hit film 12th Fail.
Some fans also compared Vikrant with Imran Khan, who stepped away from the film industry to focus on his mental health and explore other interests after his 2015 film Katti Batti.

While some fans mentioned that it’s the “end of an era” for Bollywood, many speculated that it might be a break from acting rather than a full retirement.
Vikrant last starred in The Sabarmati Report alongside Raashii Khanna and Ridhi Dogra. The film, which hit screens on November 15, has collected a total of Rs 26 crores nett at the Indian box office.
