Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday replaced the word "Muslims" with "votebank" as he continued with the attack on the Congress over alleged appeasement and tagged the Trinamul along with it during an election campaign meeting in Maldah on Friday while theh second phase of voting in the lok Sabha polls was on elsewhere.
“The INDI alliance plans to snatch the mangalsutra, jewellery and properties belonging to tribals, women and poor. The Shehzada of Congress (Rahul Gandhi) has brought an X-ray machine from abroad. They will find out all the wealth you possess, snatch it and give it to their votebank,” said Modi, addressing a rally to garner suport for BJP candidates of the two Maldah Lok Sabha seats, Khagen Murmu (Maldah North) and Srirupa Mitra Chowdhury (Maldah South).
“The Congress has announced it and the Trinamul has not said a word against it. This suits the policy of appeasement that both these parties pursue,” Modi told his audience.
The speech was delivered in a district which has over 51 per cent Muslims and around 48 per cent Hindus, according to the 2011 census.
He also took on the Trinamul over the jobs-for-bribes scandal that has rocked the Bengal education department.
The Prime Minister’s speech came a day after the Election Commission of India took cognizance of complaints filed by the Congress, the CPM and the CPI (M-L) against a similar speech that Modi delivered on Sunday last in Rajasthan’s Banswara. A similar letter, citing alleged violation of the model code of conduct by Rahul Gandhi was also sent to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
At Friday's rally, Modi said the Congress and the Trinamul were against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act and wanted it to be rolled back because it went against their votebank.
“The Trinamul allows infiltrators to settle here while the Congress gives away your wealth to them. The Congress plans to impose 55 per cent tax on your property. Your children will not inherit your property, it will go to their votebank,” Modi said.
Modi also reiterated his accusation that the Congress had included Muslims in the list of OBCs in Karnataka and deprived the OBCs from their rights.
Attacking the Mamata Banerjee government, Modi said nothing moved in Bengal without bribes. “The Trinamul government toyed with the future of the youths of Bengal with the education scam. The incomes of 26,000 families have been snatched because of the Trinamul. Now these people are burdened with the money they had borrowed to bribe the Trinamul leaders,” said Modi referring to Monday’s verdict of the Calcutta High Court which declared null and void 25,753 jobs of teaching and non-teaching staff in state-run and state-sponsored schools.
“Development has stopped in Bengal. Only thing that runs is thousand crores worth scams from Saradha to recruitment in schools, civic bodies, coal and cattle smuggling. Even the money sent by the centre is siphoned off by the Trinamul ministers, leaders and extortionists. While the Trinamul rakes in money, the people of Bengal suffer,” he said.
