The Congress on Friday questioned the government’s inaction on Narendra Modi’s allegations about Adani-Ambani's "black money", seeking to press home the advantage it sees in the Prime Minister's return to silence on India’s top two businessmen after Wednesday’s momentary digression.
With Modi returning to his default mode — silence — on the duo after the rally at Karimnagar in Telangana, the Congress has cottoned on to the unease in the BJP camp.
On Friday, the Congress decided to heap pressure on the government. "The Hon'ble Prime Minister had made a very serious allegation: that two prominent industrialists have tempo-filling quantities of cash and they were delivered to the Congress party. Coming from the Hon'ble Prime Minister, this allegation has to be viewed with utmost seriousness," former finance minister P. Chidambaram posted on X.
"Mr Rahul Gandhi has demanded an enquiry by the CBI or ED. The demand for an enquiry is absolutely justified. Why has the Hon'ble Prime Minister (the Minister for CBI) gone quiet in the last 24 hours? Why has the Hon'ble Finance Minister (the Minister for ED) not responded to the demand for an enquiry? Their silence is ominous," he added.
The Congress communications team saw it fit to flag some of the salient components of its "Hum Adani Ke Hain Kaun" series on the "PM’s close relationship with Adani and other monopolists", including the "misuse of India’s investigating agencies to enrich Adani and hand him monopolies".
The Congress also highlighted how the Prime Minister used India’s foreign policy to "enrich his cronies"; flagging projects the group bagged in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
"It is very clear that the prospect of losing power and the likelihood of a JPC to investigate the 'AdaniMegaScam' after 4 June has unnerved the PM. Ironically, he has trapped himself with his panicked remarks on Adani-Ambani from which he will find it difficult to extricate himself. The chickens are coming home to roost…," Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh said in a statement.
