Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged on Friday that the Trinamool Congress government had tried its best to protect the oppressor in Sandeshkhali because his name is "Shahjahan Sheikh".

Bringing up the identity of Trinamool's former strongman at Sandeshkhali, Shahajahan, to point out the ruling party's alleged politics of appeasement, Modi said in Burdwan on Friday: "In Sandeshkhali, such big atrocities occurred on the Dalit sisters. People across the country raised demand for action. But the TMC continued to protect the oppressors!.... I want to ask the TMC government. Is it only because the name of the oppressor was Shahjahan Sheikh?"

Modi on Friday addressed three back-to-back rallies in Burdwan, Tehatta and Bolpur in support of BJP candidates for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

"Yesterday, I listened to a song sung by women of Sandeshkhali about their plight. They sang it by trumping table. It was not written by any professional composer. They were labourers. It was in Bengali. But I couldn't resist tears. I would request all Bengalis to listen to it. It was such an emotional song that even a non-Bengali would understand it," Modi said in Burdwan.

"The TMC is engaged in appeasement only. Please tell me if the vote bank is more important than humanity. Do you think this appeasement is bigger than humanity," Modi said.

Alleging that Trinamool had no respect for the Constitution and democracy which led to crimes in Sandeshkhali, Modi said the ruling party was running a "mobocracy, not a republic".

"The TMC was well aware of what was going on in Sandeshkhali. They were oppressive. Do you think that that ammunition found by police was meant to strengthen the democracy there?" Modi asked.

Modi alleged that understanding that in the first two phases, the boat of INDIA block sank, the Opposition has launched "vote jihad" against the BJP. "The educated family of Congress has been advocating this", the Prime Minister said.

"So far it was behind the curtain...But now they are so depressed and desperate that they now advocating openly announcing in microphones", he added accusing the Left for silence as it has become a common programme of the Opposition block.

"INDIA alliance consisting of Trinamul, Congress and Left only know one common programme — appeasement for vote bank. You know that Congress divided the country on the basis of religion. But what was the fault of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis, who were compelled to remain on the other side of the border? It was assured to look after such people during the time of partition."
