The Trinamul leadership in Malda filed a fresh complaint with the chief electoral officer (CEO) of the state and also lodged a complaint with the police against Khagen Murmu, the BJP candidate of Malda North seat on Friday, alleging violation of the model code of conduct (MCC).
This is the second time that the ruling party of Bengal has filed a complaint against Murmu in the past 24 hours.
Asis Kundu, Trinamul’s spokesperson in the district, said a number of graffiti and festoons put in Murmu’s support mentions that if BJP is voted to power in the state, the monthly assistance provided by the state government to women under Laxmir Bhandar scheme will be increased to 3,000 rupees.
“You cannot lure people by making promises of offering money during campaigns. BJP has been doing it in a blatant manner. We suspect the campaign has been planned by the BJP candidate of Malda north. He cannot escape the responsibility and we believe it is a gross violation of the MCC,” said Kundu.
As of now, women belonging to the general category receive Rs. 500 per month while those belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe category receive a monthly assistance of 1,000 rupees.
From April, those in the general category will get Rs 1,000 per month while the other categories will get Rs 1,200.
On Thursday, Kundu had filed a complaint with the CEO, alleging that Murmu had raised a baseless charge at Prasun Banerjee, the Trinamul candidate contesting in the seat.
Banerjee, a former IPS, had held a meeting with senior police officers in Malda at a private hotel, Murmu had alleged.
In Friday's complaint, Trinamul has attached photographs of graffiti and festoons where the promise to increase the assistance was made.
Paritosh Choudhury, a BJP leader, said nothing new has been mentioned in graffiti and other publicity materials put up before the elections. In Malda, elections will be held on May 7.
“Our party leader Suvendu Adhikari has already made the announcement that if BJP comes to power in Bengal, the assistance will be increased to 3,000 rupees per month. It has been simply reiterated in the campaign,” he said.
Along with the complaint, Trinamul has also filed a complaint at Malda police station and has sent a copy of it to the district police chief.
“We want such graffiti to be wiped and festoons to be removed,” said Kundu.
