Sukanta Majumdar issues UP-style 'encounter' threat as post-poll violence unfolds in Bengal

'Let me tell the gangsters, the BJP is coming to power… and none will be spared even after they take up the BJP flag. There will be the UP treatment — encounters,' added Majumdar, referring to the contentious killing by police of alleged criminals since 2017 when Yogi Adityanath came to power

Tension on Sunday continued in many parts of the nine south Bengal seats that went to polls a day ago, even as the BJP’s state unit chief Sukanta Majumdar threatened an import of the notorious Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh model of “encounters” in Bengal.

Responding to questions on the murder of a BJP activist in Nadia’s Kaliganj on Saturday night before, Majumdar alleged on Sunday that a fresh spell of post-poll violence started with the murder.

“Even in Kolkata Dakshin, our party workers were attacked and threatened. Trinamool Congress has realised their end is nigh,” he said, oozing confidence in the BJP's performance in Bengal.

“Let me tell the gangsters, the BJP is coming to power… and none will be spared even after they take up the BJP flag. There will be the UP treatment — encounters,” added Majumdar, referring to the contentious killing by police of hundreds of alleged criminals since 2017 when Yogi Adityanath came to power, by faking armed encounters with them in "self-defence".

Not long after Majumdar’s threat, many BJP women activists staged a demonstration in Agarati-Mandalpara, Sandeshkhali, alleging Trinamool workers attacked them on Saturday night disguised as cops.

The women alleged that the goons, with the support of the police, raided several houses in the area and threatened people with dire consequences.

BJP supporters took to the streets and launched a vigil, even trying to prevent the police from entering the area.

“The goons attacked many of our supporters in Sarberia… they went on a rampage,” said a woman.

Trouble started afresh on Sunday when a police team went to arrest a person accused of attacking a cop. But the violent women hijacked him and blocked the road, leading to a clash with the Rapid Action Force. Even central forces had a tough time managing the situation.

The police arrested five persons. The police and the local administration also clamped preventive orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in four gram panchayat areas. Policemen were seen appealing to people to maintain peace.

In Calcutta, Trinamool was accused of assaulting BJP activist Ramesh Sau, who worked as a polling agent for the party’s Kolkata Uttar candidate Tapas Roy.

The BJP alleged that on Saturday night, after the polls concluded, Sau was attacked by armed Trinamool activists. He suffered a head injury. The BJP leadership alleged that Sau was abducted by goons who took him to Dhapa, where he was severely beaten up as “punishment”.

“Such allegations are baseless,” said a Trinamool councillor in Kolkata Uttar.

On Saturday night, a woman activist of the CPM was allegedly beaten up along with her daughter, by Trinamool activists in Baghajatin area of the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency. The goons also allegedly ransacked the CPM’s camp office ad attacked women. CPM candidate Srijan Bhattacharya urged police action.

In Barrackpore, bombs were hurled at a BJP worker’s house on Saturday night. Another bomb was hurled outside a Trinamool office in the town.

In Naihati, bombs were thrown in front of a Trinamool office. Trinamool councillor Ranjan Karmakar blamed hooligans close to the BJP.
