Krishna Kumari Rai, wife of Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), is set to make her electoral debut as a Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) candidate from the Namchi-Singhithang Assembly constituency.
Golay, who is also the president of the SKM, will contest from the Soreng-Chakung and Rhenock constituencies.
Krishna Kumari, a former school teacher, had been active in public events and was seen accompanying Golay at many government and SKM programmes in the past one year.
“We needed a high-profile face for the Namchi seat and that is why she was selected,” said a source.
Golay replaced his son Aditya in the Soreng constituency which is considered a stronghold of Golay.
“However, with Golay contesting from two constituencies, there are talks in Sikkim that Aditya might be given the ticket if Golay wins both the seats. However, there is nothing final,” said an observer.
The SKM retained 12 legislators but in a surprise move also gave tickets to three sitting BJP MLAs who had joined the party a few days back.
The SKM decided to renominate the sitting MP Indra Hang Subba for the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.
The SKM fielded Pamin Lepcha in the Gnathang-Machong segment.
Pamin is the daughter of D.T. Lepcha, the BJP Rajya Sabha member from Sikkim. In January, he won the seat unopposed with the support of the SKM.
On Saturday, the BJP's state unit described the SKM as corrupt and decided to break the alliance.
